    Convert Symphony to Excel

    Hi,

First post on this forum, and I wouldn't waste your time, but...

I've been given several 3.5" diskettes (remember them)? with a whole bunch of .WR1 extension files on them, which I believe is Lotus Symphony. The owner of the data has asked me to get the data off of the drives and to convert them to Excel.

I had a 3.5" drive so said I'd have a go at the task...

I managed to get the data onto my HDD and then did the usual scour for conversion software and that's where I've got stuck! File.extensions.com sent me to Softronic for a trial version of ABC 123 converter, Installed it but could not do anything with the trial version and the support site is now defunct, I also can't find any alternative software to do the job and Excel can't make head nor tail of the files.

The guy who I'm doing it for is disabled and also has to look after his, even more, disabled brother and all the files are old important data he needs, so any help would be seriously appreciated.

    Many thanks,

    Iain

...also worth mentioning that the data is all password protected too... :/

    Re: Convert Symphony to Excel

Hi, thanks, I looked at that, but my Excel/coding skills aren't all that. Don't even know how to find the editor/proc run environment, assuming it's not done in poershell or in the DOS window. If you could advise me on that, I'd be really grateful. I'm also running Excel 2016, which is probably too recent?

    Cheers,

    Iain

Ignoring the code, have you tried opening one of the files in Excel?

Yup, tried that and made changes to the trust centre for legacy input but came up with jargon (even though it did give me options at the beginning I didn't have any clue on the delimiters of the original file.

Have you tried getting hold of a copy of Lotus Symphony?

For example you mentioned Softonic and they appear to have a Symphony download here.

    Re: Convert Symphony to Excel

If the file doesn't open properly in Excel, the code won't do anything to fix that.

In Options > Advanced > Lotus compatibility settings (all the way at the bottom), tick both of those boxes. That may help.

At some point, Excel had the option during installation to include various file conversions, Lotus among them IIRC. It's been long enough since I installed Excel that I don't remember if it still does. You might try to start a reinstall and look for it. (Don't bother to actually do the reinstall if you don't see it.)

I otherwise have no suggestion, sorry.

Yes, I tried installing the windows version and it didn't recognise the files. I think the .wr1's are from the DOS version of Symphony

    Re: Convert Symphony to Excel

Just found a Symphony download of the DOS version, but I'm running 64bit here and I don't think it'll like it even with compatibiliy settings.

I could try running the code in the MrExcel link you sent but noyt sure how to.

    Cheers,

    Iain

You can run DOS programs using DOSBox - I use it to play old DOS games like Civilisation.

Perhaps you could use it for DOS Symphony?

    Re: Convert Symphony to Excel

and for the future, here is how you load up VBA. Good that you found the software. Good Luck with the conversion.

How to install your new code
    1. Copy the Excel VBA code
    2. Select the workbook in which you want to store the Excel VBA code
    3. Press Alt+F11 to open the Visual Basic Editor
    4. Choose Insert > Module
    5. Edit > Paste the macro into the module that appeared
    6. Close the VBEditor
    7. Save your workbook (Excel 2007+ select a macro-enabled file format, like *.xlsm)

To run the Excel VBA code:
    1. Press Alt-F8 to open the macro list
    2. Select a macro in the list
    3. Click the Run button

    Re: Convert Symphony to Excel

Installed the Lotus Symphony via the link you sent and it doesn't recognise the file format. The only thing I found online was a converter package by ABC, but as I said above, it doesn't do anything as it's the trial version and it can't be purchased anywhere...

Could you tell me how to run thant code on the MrExcel link please?

Unfortunately the attachment icon doesn't work at the moment. So, to attach an Excel file you have to do the following: Just before posting, scroll down to Go Advanced and then scroll down to Manage Attachments. Now follow the instructions at the top of that screen.
