Help with SUM of one column based on data in 2nd column

I am trying to SUM total dollar values by quarter. I have submitted dollars in Column F and the projected Quarter in Column J. I want to sum to show in cell A8 for Q1.

HEre's the IF statement I tried.

    =IF(A8=SUM(F14:F113),SUMIF($J$14:$J$114,LEFT(A4,2),$F$14:$F$113))

We can't see where anything is.... and I'm not going to retype it all!!!

Will you please attach a SMALL sample Excel workbook (10-20 rows of data is usually enough)? Please don't attach a picture of one (no-one will want to re-type all your stuff before starting).

    1. Make sure that your sample data are truly REPRESENTATIVE of your real data. The use of unrepresentative data is very frustrating and can lead to long delays in reaching a solution.

    2. Make sure that your desired solution is also shown (mock up the results manually).

    3. Make sure that all confidential information is removed first!!

    4. Try to avoid using merged cells. They cause lots of problems!

Unfortunately the attachment icon doesn't work at the moment. So, to attach an Excel file you have to do the following: Just before posting, scroll down to Go Advanced and then scroll down to Manage Attachments. Now follow the instructions at the top of that screen.

Glenn, that worked! Now I tried to carry that one out to one more argument but its not working. So using the attached workbook (revised copy of the previous) I now want to sum total dollars in A12 by quarter for a selected FOT NAME in column A (A14:A100). I only want to show a sum if I filter for any populated name.

If I understand correctly then the following formula should give you the correct amount in cell A12 and across:
