Combine Offset and Index Function in Forumula

    Hi Everyone

I am trying to combine these formulas into one.

    =IF(ISERROR(OFFSET($W$3,MATCH(SMALL($Z$3:$Z$1000,ROW()-ROW($AM$3)+1),$Z$3:$Z$1000,0)-1,0)),"",OFFSET($W$3,MATCH(SMALL($Z$3:$Z$1000,ROW()-ROW($AM$3)+1),$Z$3:$Z$1000,0)-1,0))

    {=IFERROR(INDEX($AM$3:$AM$1000,SMALL(IF(ISTEXT($AM$3:$AM$1000),ROW($AM$3:$AM$1000)-ROW($AN$3)+1),ROWS($AM$3:$AM3))),"")}

The first formula looks to see if there is a yes in the column (W) and then if so returns the offset email address in another column (Z).

The second formula then strips the empty cells from the results so the email addresses are one after the other in the column.

    Many Thanks

    Scott

Trying to visualise that makes my head sore.

Will you please attach a SMALL sample Excel workbook (10-20 rows of data is usually enough)? Please don't attach a picture of one (no-one will want to re-type all your stuff before starting).

    1. Make sure that your sample data are truly REPRESENTATIVE of your real data. The use of unrepresentative data is very frustrating and can lead to long delays in reaching a solution.

    2. Make sure that your desired solution is also shown (mock up the results manually).

    3. Make sure that all confidential information is removed first!!

    4. Try to avoid using merged cells. They cause lots of problems!

Unfortunately the attachment icon doesn't work at the moment. So, to attach an Excel file you have to do the following: Just before posting, scroll down to Go Advanced and then scroll down to Manage Attachments. Now follow the instructions at the top of that screen.

In your sample, you must have reordered the columns: which column should contain the "Yes". Column W contains none. TYhe first formula points, eventually, to Yes/No in column J....

So, an array fromula in AR5:

    =IFERROR(INDEX(D:D,SMALL(IF($J$5:$J$14="Yes",IF($D$5:$D$14<>"",ROW($W$5:$W$14))),ROWS(AR$5:AR5))),"")

Array Formulae are a little different from ordinary formulae in that they MUST be confirmed in the FIRST CELL ONLY by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER to activate the array, not just ENTER. After that, the array can be dragged down as normal, to cover the desired range.

You will know the array is active when you see curly brackets { } - or "curly braces" for those of you in the USA, or "flower brackets" for those of you in India - appear around the outside of your formula. If you do not use CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER you will (almost always) get an error message or an incorrect answer. Press F2 on that cell and try again.

Don't type the curly brackets yourself - it won't work...

Re: Combine Offset and Index Function in Forumula

    Hi Glenn

Thanks for the email. Apologies for changing the spreadsheet post my posting.

The first formula is in AR and now looks to see if there is a rank order number in the column (AE) and then if so returns the offset email address in another column (D).

The second formula is in AS and then strips the empty cells from the results so the email addresses are one after the other in the column.

Using the formula you provided I get an empty first cell and then #NUM error in several cells:

    (Blank)
    [email protected]
    [email protected]
    [email protected]
    [email protected]

    #NUM!
    #NUM!
    #NUM!
    #NUM!
    #NUM!

If you used the formula correctly, it is impossible to get the error messages. It has an error trap to remove them.

Also, are you sure that the array is active in the first cell?

No. I got it. I now have it referring to the numbers in AE. Incidentally, I was only half-right above. The sheet didn't have the error trap, although the formula on the forum did.

It should alll be OK now...
