Cannot delete leading apostrophe - keeps coming back!

I've tried copying a blank cell, then using Paste Special Add, even deleting manually but the apostrophe comes back! All I want is to convert the cells in col. F to come out like cell F1. Is there any easy way to do this? (And why does the apostrophe return when manually deleted??)

The values from F3 down are string (text) values not numbers like F1. No amount of paste special add zero will change them to a number. You'll need to do some string slicing in a helper column to convert them to proper dates. Something like
