Is it possible to change settings so that Excel does not update data tables every time I save the file? I have formulas set to update automatically except data tables.

Options - Formulas - Calculation options - (tick) Manual - (un-tick) Recalculate workbook before saving
but after that you will need recalculate manually (F9)

There is only one possibility I suppose ... change calculating options to "Manually calculating" and unmark "Calculate before saving", then for calculating you need to use: F9 or Shift + F9 or Ctrl+Alt+F9 or Ctrl+Alt+Shift+F9
