Data Table Issue

I have a data table that was pulled from somewhere else, think A1:D5 (only mine is much bigger). Every cell has either a blank or a number in it. The problem is, the blank cells actually have formatting and aren't truly blank. At the end of the day, I'm trying to run a {=SUM(ABS(A1:A5))} and drag it across to sum each column. However, because there's formatting in the blank cells, I get #VALUE!. When I delete out the blank cells manually, the formula works. Does anyone have a workaround to make this easier than manually deleting out the blank cells? Thanks for any input on this.

FYI - my table is 141 rows by 51 columns. It would take me all day to do this manually.
