how to copy a spreadsheet and retain the exact row colors

I'm trying to learn how to sort a spreadsheet (stock market data) by
individual columns (ie: dividends, EPS, etc...). As I first step I made a
copy of the spreadsheet and pasted it into a new spreadsheet.

The original one had different colored rows...first two rows white, next
three rows gray, next two rows white, next three rows gray, and so on. But
the copy I made has different row colors and some are too dark to read.

How can I make the copy or duplicate spreadsheet with the same original
    colors?

If you want the row colors of destination file as it is in the source file simply copy and paste the data from the source file to destination file

If you want the row colors of destination file as it is, then copy and paste the values (pastespecial > values).

With conditional format you can make the three rows colored gray.

    Use this formula:

Siva, I've tried the copy and paste three different ways but the result is the same. I tried copy/paste, copy/special paste, and insert copied cells. I tried selecting the cells from the topmost left cell, and also from inside the data area. I tried turning off freeze panes, and with freeze panes on. Always the same result, although on time the column width was greater than the original.

Why don't you create a duplicate of your sheet?

Right Click on your sheet name at the bottom of excel

    Select "move or copy"

    Click on "Copy"

    Click on "Ok"

mehmetcik, I tried that but the problem remains.

If I knew how to, I would manually change the colors of the rows that are too dark. Where would I look to find how the creator of this spreadsheet set up the row colors? I don't know how to use the conditional formula that popipipo provided above, but there must be a repository of these formulas somewhere...

Will you please attach a sample Excel workbook?

Unfortunately the attachment icon doesn't work at the moment, so to attach an Excel file you have to do the following: just before posting, scroll down to Go Advanced and then scroll down to Manage Attachments. Now follow the instructions at the top of that screen.
