    adding cells containing data

    hi,

I want to add together all my cells regardless of value that contain any data eg: a register of people attending and if they have paid in one column :
    eg:-

    A1 A2
    NAME ATTENDENCE

    JOE SMITH NP (not paid)
    DAVID JONES £10
    JAMES DAVIES £5
    MOLLY JONES NP

All my values in A2 I want to treat as meaning "1" so I can see how many people actually attended

hope that makes sense and thank you for taking the time to read I look forward to your replies

    Re: adding cells containing data

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

Please upload a workbook or a representative cut down copy, anonymised if necessary. It is always easier to advise if we can see your request in its context.

Show a before and after situation with manually calculated results, explaining which information is data and which is results, and if it's not blindingly obvious how you have arrived at your results some explanatory notes as well.

It looks like you may be wanting to COUNT things not SUM/ADD them but a workbook will tell us

    hi Richard,
thank you for your speedy reply,
by you using the phrase "count" I managed to work out the problem.. so thank you, you helped me by saying one word!

If you don't mind could you help with another problem?

can I enter extra data into a column which has a "if formula" in and then delete the extra data but protect the formula from being deleted?

    thank you again
price is £5 for once class or £7 for two classes

    Re: adding cells containing data

You can only do what I think you're wanting to do if you use a macro which would reinstate the formula when you deleted whatever is in there. A cell can only hold one thing at a time. Normally, and to avoid using macros it's much easier to use a helper column. So for instance a formula in D2 might be

    Formula: copy to clipboard
