    Excel 2016 crashing constantly

    Hi All,

I looked on the forum and did not see that anyone else is experiencing this problem. I am using Office Home and Student 2016. Up until the past three weeks or so I was having no problems with the Excel workbook I use on a daily basis. Now, at least once a day, the workbook locks up. By that, I mean that I will leave the workbook open as I do other things. When I come back to update the workbook I find that it is frozen and when I click on it nothing happens until I click to exit out of it - then I get a dialog box of choices to close it or restart. When I do one or the other I get the message that Microsoft is being sent info to help solve the problem. After restarting, the workbook works fine again until I reach a point of inactivity and when I come back to enter something it is once again locked up.

Some additional data: the file size of the workbook is only 887B, there are no macros, and the formulas are pretty simple. The computer is a laptop with no known issues. And I have the current version of Office Home and Student 2016 updated.

Thanks in advance for a solution to this problem.

    Re: Excel 2016 crashing constantly

You could try creating a new workbook and copying each sheet across into it.
Then try opening that new workbook see if that one crashes.

Ensure you describe your problem clearly, I have little time available to solve these problems and do not appreciate numerous changes to them.

Thank you, Special-K. Spent better part of yesterday copying over to new workbook and then doing search to undo links to original workbook in formulas. Ended up breaking the original workbook into two workbooks. Long story short, so far, no more crashes. Fingers crossed and knock on wood.

I had sort of same issue a while back.
One of the following issues could be the problem.
So many things could do exactly what you’re describing.

Thanks Brian. I did look at that and did not find a solution to my problem which is continuing.

    Re: Excel 2016 crashing constantly

Update. My new workbook has now crashed. This occurred after I had added data to it, closed the laptop with the Excel workbook open and running, coming back half an hour later, opening the laptop, and discovering the workbook frozen. Any suggestions?

    Re: Excel 2016 crashing constantly

I would start by pointing out these types of problems are hard to resolve and generally take a long time to fix if ever. The reason is you are having an issue that appears to be random with no known trigger to test if its fixed. So in other words its not as if you said "When I copy a cell it crashes". Hypothetically, if that was the case, then it would be easy to test solutions. In your situation, its basically try something and wait to see if the problem surfaces.

With that in mind I am going to answer your question with a bunch of questions in the hopes that we can narrow down the cause, collect more information about the problem and maybe resolve it in a verifiable way.

The first thing we need to do is determine the scope of the problem. This will require testing the "bounds" so to speak:
    1. Does Excel crash in the same fashion in all files, some files or only 1 file? (If you are not sure, test it...try other files and ensure they do or do not behave the same, dont guess)
    2. Do you have any add-ins installed? If you run Excel in safe mode does the issue ever happen?
    3. Do you have another machine you can try the file on with the same relative setup (OS, version of Excel, etc)? Does the same problem happen there?
    4. Do you have older copies of the file, if so is there a past copy that does NOT have the problem?

The above will help us establish if its an issue with the file(s), Excel or both. They will help us determine if 3rd party software may cause the problem. #3 can help us determine if its your specific machine/environment or any machine. Older copies can help us determine what may have changed to cause the issue (ie prior to adding x formula or y feature to the file there isnt an issue in the older versions).

You can also check eventviewer in Windows to see if it logged the error/crash. This could provide information about what exactly crashed and with research possibly why. Sometimes these logs are helpful (like referring to a specific addin causing the crash), sometimes they provide no information at all. Worth a look as its easy to check.

Based on the information we gather in this fashion we can determine the best course of action to try and resolve the issue or further narrow down possible causes.
Ways to get help: Post clear questions, explain your overall goal, supply as much background as possible, respond to questions asked of you by those trying to help and post sample(s) files.

    Re: Excel 2016 crashing constantly

    Thanks ZerOCool.

I checked the eventviewer and found this error info about the crash :

The program EXCEL.EXE version 16.0.8730.2175 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Security and Maintenance control panel.
    Process ID: ffc
    Start Time: 01d3912b683cc423
    Termination Time: 0
    Application Path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\EXCEL.EXE
    Report Id: 1c2f506f-8470-42ff-a62a-c41b30ffeb89
    Faulting package full name:
    Faulting package-relative application ID:
(in the section below the above, it referred to the error as an Application Hang)

I checked Security and Maintenance and there are no issues reported.

BTW the workbook doesn't have any add-ins or external links.

    Re: Excel 2016 crashing constantly

Did the eventviewer entry list a "faulting module"? Thats the key part to the error.

Workbooks themselves do not contain add-ins, Excel as a program has them enabled and I can tell you 99.99% whether you know it or not you have some add-ins (unless you have disabled the default ones that come with Excel intentionally and/or do not have any 3rd party programs that install and activate the addins by default). Running Excel in safe mode also prevents files in the startup folders from opening automatically, so generally if the problem doesnt occur in safe mode its either addins or files in startup folders causing the issue. So basically if all is fine in safe mode you start normal, disable all addins, enable 1 at a time until the issue occurs again. If the issue occurs with all addins disabled in normal mode, then you inspect the start up folders and copy files out to see if they caused the problem.

To best help go through my questions in my prior post thoroughly and respond back with the results. As I mentioned issues like these take time to diagnose...usually days if not weeks as its a game of try something and wait. The issue could resurface after trying something 10 minutes later, 10 hours later or 10 days later.

    1. update your profile about your real Excel version
    2. if there is no any sensitive data - attach excel file

    Re: Excel 2016 crashing constantly

    Zer0Cool,

    Thanks for your suggestions.

Quick Update. Right after you last posting, I received an update from MS which I installed. Being the lazy and optimistic sort, I decided to take the easy way out and give the update a few days to see if it would solve my problem. Knock on wood (for the second time), so far, I have not had any further crashes.

Once again, thank you for your help.

    Jon
