    Excel 2016 - stop copying!!!!

    Hi there,

I've recently upgraded to Office 2016 at work and one thing I can't figure out is that when I copy and paste a cell or range in Excel, it maintains the copy for all of eternity, until I copy something else. So there is always a moving dotted line somewhere on my spreadsheet. It is infuriating.
And when I want to insert a row or similar, the first option is "Insert Copied Cells" which I copied about 4 hours ago.

Does anyone know how to disable this wretched functionality? I have Googled it to no avail, and i'm on the verge of mass hysteria.

Thanks in advance (please save me)

    Jemma

I'm not sure that one person alone can have mass hysteria, but I do feel your pain.

It takes a bit of getting used to, but can prove quite handy. A quick click of the ESC key will rid you of the marching ants.

As one who uses the keyboard to navigate more than the mouse, I typically copy paste by
    1) Select source cells
    2) ctrl-C to copy to clipboard
    3) select destination
4a) Enter key to paste in destination and clear clipboard
4b) ctrl-V to paste and keep source in clipboard. (repeat 4b for each desired destination, then Esc to clear clipboard).

I have occasionally wished there was a menu/ribbon equivalent for the Enter key (step 4a) "paste and clear clipboard" command, but I don't use the ribbon/menus for copying and pasting enough to become hysterical about it .

The "marching ants" © remain until you either act upon another part of Excel (entering data, another copy/paste, creating new sheet, etc). You can deselect the source range using esc manually.

The benefit of it staying is to represent visually what was last copied to the clipboard. Other then the animation being present it shouldn't hinder you in any way.

Thanks to everyone who responded, looks like i'll be using my escape key a lot more now!
It hadn't occurred to me to try that - I had tried ctrl D with no success.

I think I could definitely have a good go at inciting mass hysteria on my own - I'm not sure people would buy into the 'excel won't stop copying the last cell' fiasco so it is left to me to carry the hysterical baton!!!
