    Help with Calculation Theory

    Hi guys!

I've been tasked with trying to determine a calculation which determines the % of improvement across 'Issues vs Volume'.

For example – should our issues decrease by 10% (we are happy) – however should usage decrease by 20% - then not really a movement?
However should usage increase by 50% and errors increase by 5% - then perhaps we are improving (depending on the issues)

So it's a balance of drop/increase in errors but depending on the usage may vary the overall result? Hope this makes sense.

    Thanks!
    Mike

Attach a sample workbook with enough data to simulate your examples with expected outcomes and rules.

    Re: Help with Calculation Theory

Thanks for the reply. It's more a concept than a current spreadsheet. I've created a sample dataset over a 4 week period.

I'm wondering if there is a way to determine if the %drop/increase in errors is material but taking into consideration the change in volumes.

I can't attached a file.. but please see below. Hope this helps.

    -Mike

Date Volume Errors % week on week Improvement
    Week 1 1oo 10 10%
    Week 2 200 15 ?
    Week 3 150 14 ?
    Week 4 250 18 ?

Sorry there should be spaces between those numbers

The question is a bit nebulous because you've talked about issues, errors, and volume without defining them or what their units are. It would also help a bit to know what the process is that you are talking about--help desk calls?

If each weeks error versus the weekly volume then you could do like this:

    err1.jpg

If on the on the other hand you wish to see the combined effect of error versus volume over a time period of 4 week then perhaps like this:

    err2.jpg

    Re: Help with Calculation Theory

Thank you all very much for the suggestions

Another idea I've had is using the average of the errors vs a determined volume, then using this as a benchmark against which to compare the actuals using variance analysis.
