No, it's not a formula you need. You need conditional formatting.

I followed the first few steps you list thru "Highlight Cell Rules"
" Equal To N" - ? I'm new to Conditional Formatting - could you please be more specific about that last step - what I do, and how it changes the N's to red.
(If it matters, the column in question already has all the "Y"s and "N"s in it - it is complete. Now I just need to change the "N"s to red).
