Cannot filter column due to merged cells

    Hi guys,

Attaching a stripped down version of my spreadsheet (removed main data).

I can't filter column AJ as I get an error message about other cells being merged/not the same size. Can anyone tell me what the workaround is?

I kind of need my cells merged!

    Thanks...................

Sorry, but the easiest solution is to unmerge the cells. Data analysis trumps aesthetics every time.

However, if you select row 2 and apply your filters, there won't be a problem.

Re: Cannot filter column due to merged cells

you probably clicked on autofilter icon while only the headercell of column AJ was selected right?
if only one cell is selected clicking Autofilter will "tell" Excel to build the Autofilters himself and outcome is not always what you expect.

So instead either select the all the data of column AJ in your case AJ2:AJ310 and then press autofilter. it then will only create a filter for that column.
if you need to filter multiple columns then it is enough to select their header cel f.e. AH2:AL2 to put filters on only those columns.

so basicly you can control where autofilter is placing filters by making selection before clicking autofilter

    Hi Ali,

I actually submitted my request wrong.

Just get rid of the merged cells. You can get the same banner effect with formatting and without merging.
