setting office 365 (2016?) as default to open excel files in win10

Hi - I've looked around and can't find an answer to this one.

I've updated to Office 365 (which I think is Office 2016?) - I cannot open excel files (.xlsx or xlsm) from the desktop icon for the file

I can open the program and find the file, which then opens it but surely there must be a way of making this work

I have checked the default program for these files and it is showing as Excel 2016

    Any ideas?

No - I don't have a problem here with it (never have since upgrading). Can you attach an offending file?

Please update your forum profile to reflect the version of Excel you are now using.

Never seen that. Are you sure that the installation went OK? Have you tried repairing the installation? I presume you've rebooted the machine?

    Good afternoon Andy Swain

It seems that quite a few users are experiencing this - I didn't - and below are some of the suggestions that are reported to have worked (not in all instances).
Try them in the order I have put them, starting from the least drastic.
    • In your Excel settings, find and untick the Ignore Other Applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE).
    • From the Windows Start menu, choose Run and enter Excel.exe /regserver. This will force Windows to re-register all it's registry keys
    • Try repairing the installation :
      1. Open Control Panel and click on Programs and Features icon.
      2. Now click on Microsoft Office entry present in the list and click on "Change" button.
      3. Now select "Repair" option and click on "Continue" button.

FYI, the /regserver switch was removed from Office 2013 onwards.

    Hi all

I contacted MS and they ran a repair on the installation - that has sorted it - thanks again to all suggestions

They ran a repair??? Why couldn't you have done that?

Anyway, pleased that did the trick. It often does in these cases.
