Can’t embed excel file into excel

I can’t embed an excel file into excel. When I do it appears fine until I save my work. It then changes to a non-opening tmp file. Never seen this before.

How are you embedding the Excel file into another Excel file? Are you creating an embedded object, or embedding an object that already exists?

Can you describe the specific steps to reproduce your problem? Have you used the exact same steps before successfully?

I am embedding an existing excel file into excel. I click on insert tab. Click on Object icon. Click on Create from file tab. Browse to find. Display as icon. I have done this in the past with success. I did try it saving the file as .xls instead of .xlsx. That seemed to work. I will mark this as solved since .xls worked but I still don’t know why. Thanks.
