I have previously used the workaround to auto-fit a row height containing merged cells successfully.
That is, have a cell on the same row as the merged cells with wrap and auto-fit set and a formula that references the contents of the merged cells.
However, this no longer works and I'm not aware of any changes to the software (Excel 2010) or the operating environment since the workaround worked successfully.
Any thoughts on why this no longer works?

Nope! I do have thoughts about merged cells, however, and that is that you shouldn't use them - spawn of the devil.
It would help enormously if you attached a workbook here that is displaying the problem. It is odd that it once worked and now doesn't, especially with an old version of Excel.
