Excel performance issues on Windows 10

Hey all - wondering if anyone else has run into this issue and if there is a fix.

My 2016 Excel running on a brand new Windows 10 laptop runs noticeably slower if the sheet I'm working on has even a single comment. This same issue existed on my previous Windows 10 laptop, but the issue doesn't occur on my Windows 7 computer.

The issue is most noticeable with scroll speed - if I hold the down arrow key, a sheet with a comment will scroll materially slower than a sheet without a comment. This issue manifests itself even in completely blank workbooks with only a single comment.

Anyone able to shed any light on this issue?

This came up only the other day, but I can't find the thread in question. However, it was suggested there that you try deselecting Provide feedback with animation in the Ease of Access section of Excel Options.

Re: Excel performance issues on Windows 10

Thats odd as I havent seen the issue on many Windows 10 machines.

To me it sounds like a rendering issue...typically a graphical kind of issue.

@AliGW gave some good recommendations to try.

I would also recommend trying with Excel opened in safe mode. If the issue is not present in safe mode its likely a problem with an addin or template, you could try and narrow it down.

I would also try/check the following options in Excel:
    • Advanced | Display | Disable Hardware Graphics Acceleration (toggle and see if it helps one way or another)
    • Advanced | Formulas | Enable Multi-Threaded calculation (should be checked)
    • Advanced | General | Enable multi-threaded processing (should be checked)
    • Advanced | General | Ignore other applications that use DDE (should almost always be unchecked)

Another thing to try is set another default printer. Even better is to use a software "printer" as the default like a PDF or XPS printer as these are pretty generic. If changing this helps, the print driver was a problem (yes it affects how the sheet on screen is rendered).

Of course, make sure both Windows and Office are up to date. I also vaguely recall Microsoft recommending Silverlight be installed for the "smoothest" experience in newer versions of Office but dont know if that is really needed, but worth a try.
Ways to get help: Post clear questions, explain your overall goal, supply as much background as possible, respond to questions asked of you by those trying to help and post sample(s) files.
