Trying to create a simple price list from a table is driving me nuts...help needed please!

    Hi All,

I have a problem. I'm no Excel expert which is why I've come here for some help. I have a price list, a snapshot is below, which is divided into three columns; Brand, Product, Price. What I'm trying to achieve, and so far failing abysmally, is the ability through a drop down list to select a Brand in a cell and the adjacent cell provides me a list of products associated with that Brand. I then want to be able to select a product and the next cell updates with the corresponding price. From my 'playing around' I've managed to create a drop down list for the Brand but duplicates are appearing which I don't want. That's as far as I've got.

Can anyone steer me in the right direction?

    Brand Product Price
    3D FURY 3D FURY HDMI-COMP £325.00
    ADA SUITE 8300 £3,376.00
    ALDOUS CAT6/JACK GREY £4.58
ALDOUS HOME NET/WK CAB LRG £250.00
    ALDOUS 1U/CAT5 12 WAY PATCH £37.50
    ALDOUS 1U/20WAY F-PANEL £33.50
    ALDOUS 4U/BLANK FULL LENGTH £20.00
    ALDOUS 1U/12WAY F-PANEL £25.50
    ALDOUS 1U/ADAPTER PLT 8WAY £19.75
    ALDOUS 1U BRUSH PANEL £16.95
    ALDOUS 1U/BLANK PANEL FULL £11.65
    ALDOUS 1U/MODULAR PAT PANEL £22.50
ALDOUS HOME NET/WK CAB MED £205.37
    ALLTRADE 2WAY 'F' SPLITTER £7.00
    ALLTRADE 3WAY 'F' SPLITTER £12.00
    ALLTRADE 4WAY 'F' SPLITTER £15.00

    Many thanks in advance

Re: Trying to create a simple price list from a table is driving me nuts...help needed ple

Will you please attach a sample Excel workbook? We are not able to work with or manipulate a picture of one and nobody wants to have to recreate your data from scratch.

    1. Make sure that your sample data are REPRESENTATIVE of your real data. The use of unrepresentative data is very frustrating and can lead to long delays in reaching a solution.

    2. Make sure that your desired results are also shown (mock up the results manually).

    3. Make sure that all confidential data is removed or replaced with dummy data first (e.g. names, addresses, E-mails, etc.).

    4. Try to avoid using merged cells as they cause lots of problems.

Unfortunately the attachment icon doesn't work at the moment, so to attach an Excel file you have to do the following: just before posting, scroll down to Go Advanced and then scroll down to Manage Attachments. Now follow the instructions at the top of that screen.

Please pay particular attention to point 2 (above): without an idea of your intended outcomes, it is often very difficult to offer appropriate advice.

I've attached an Excel file but I'm not able to mock up the intended outcome as I simply don't know how!

Are you not able to mock up manually the results you wish to see???

Does the attached, where I have added slicers, achieve what you want? If so, I can explain how to do it.

Re: Trying to create a simple price list from a table is driving me nuts...help needed ple

    Hi Ali,

It certainly helps but the ultimate use for the price list spreadsheet would be for me to be able to select a list of products and have Excel fill in the prices row by row to build up a quote. I've attached another sample of what a quote would look like. You will notice that the Brand and Product have been added together to form the contents of one cell. Not certain if this is doable, if so then great, if its really complex then no need.

    Best wishes

That tutorial is interesting but doesn't deal with complex items such as duplicate Brand names and an expanding or shrinking list of products. Your example is perhaps closer to what I'm looking for Ali.

Yes. here at last... I'm not completely certain that I know what you want.

Do you want to click on a cell and see only (one replicate of each): 3D FURY, ADA, ALDOUS, etc.

Then choose 1 and see only the relevant products?

If so, how many suppliers are there? <10, <100, >100?

That's correct Glenn. We have probably in the order of 50 - 60 different brands and about a total of 1500 different products.

Re: Trying to create a simple price list from a table is driving me nuts...help needed ple

That would be a total nightmare to achieve using a formula. It would take a day or two to do. I am no good with VBA, but that's the only way to go.

If you want to try (!!) to do it by formula, then I can (TRY to) set up 2 or 3 for you... and let you tackle the other 50!!

Alternatively, mark this thread as closed (commenting that you have gone for VBA) and repost (giving the details from posts 12 & 13, and your sample sheet from post 5) in the VBA sub-forum. That way it will show as having had no replies and will attract more attention.

There's no need to close this and open another thread - if the OP decides to go with VBA, I can move the thread.

Well if you can do one or two and I can figure out how you're doing it I can do it for the rest. Good learning experience. If not, then VBA it is!

    Thanks guys!

50-60 Brands is a lot in a drop down. What is the maximum number of products per brand you would expect to be in a drop down?

I've got a formula "solution". It will take a wall of text to explain the parts. I'll wait for your answers before posting.

Re: Trying to create a simple price list from a table is driving me nuts...help needed ple

hmm looks like dependant DV could do this..
however as Dave has mentioned, too many brands/products means you will have a heck of a time selecting things one at a time

so probably something like an "autocomplete" so you can type in "B" and give you all the brands that begin with B?

We could have perhaps 100 items per brand. Many are of course a lot less. Autocomplete sounds good but to be honest out of the 50 or so brands less than 20 are used very often.

Mine is a dependent DV solution ... but there is no autocomplete in it. You would get the 50-60 brands and the occasional 100 products.

It sounds like humdingaling has something in mind though.

Re: Trying to create a simple price list from a table is driving me nuts...help needed ple

This whole area is not handled well by Excel. AFAIK, there aren't any "robust" ways of doing this neatly. However, my two esteemed colleagues may have a trick up their sleeves...

Here's something for you to look at.

Sheet 1 is your stock list.

Sheet 2 does all the donkey work.

Sheet 3 is where you have the two dropdowns.

Take a look to see if it's anywhere close to what you want. I can explain later... as it is NOT fully automated. Manual intervention is needed if you add/remove stock items.

Re: Trying to create a simple price list from a table is driving me nuts...help needed ple

i feel compelled to do a "proper" job of it since so many people looking at it now lol

Added a lot of random data there to give a better testing environment, it should be pretty be robust enough that it actually shines with more data
of course all the named ranges will been to expand with the expansion of data

I tried to note down as much as possible into how things were achieved

using principles found here for cascading DV
    https://www.contextures.com/xlDataVal08.html

    and here for unique list
    https://www.get-digital-help.com/200...om-one-column/

The truncation part in brands i picked up along the way during my time on here (forgot the original source though)

Unfortunately, it's not working here. The downward arrows do nothing, even if I type a letter into the box first.

Hi, Humdingaling. This looks like you spent a while working at this one!! However, I can't seem to get the autocomplete DD working in column B. It just sits and looks at me if I try to enter "W" for woodpecker. I can see HOW it should work... but it doesn't seem to want to play...

Column C is very nice, indeed. It gets round a number of problems in one fell swoop!!

Why LOOKUP rather than VLOOKUP in C... personal preference??

Incidentally, I have found an old file with exactly the same formula for the autocomplete thing. It's not working either!! Is this a "feature" of Excel 2013???

hmmmm, it stops working after i save it

however, go to cell and press data validation and press enter and it should work again
i remember this stupid bug but i forgot how i fixed it in the end...need to revisit

hmmm why lookup...cause the two criteria, didnt want to use a helper column

The DV formula in B looks overcomplicated to me. Try using:

    =OFFSET(Data!$F$1,MATCH(B2&"*",Brands,0),0,COUNTIF(Brands,B2&"*"),1)

which seems to work even after saving and reopening.

I had been trying the same formula as rorya... it didn't seem to want to work for me. But it seems fine in your file. Back to the testing lab...

I do - you edited post #36 after Humdingaling pointed out that there was a slight error with your formula. It's really not helpful to post-edit your messages in this way: better for the flow of the thread to add a new message with the correction, please. We all make the odd mistake - there is no shame in it.

Seems to work now - well done! Going to have a really good look at this as I think I can use it myself. Thanks!

I'm away for a couple of hours, but want to put this one through its paces... It looks like the best attempt to get this perfect that I've seen, to date. I have a couple of wee tweaks that I want to look at, too.

    glad you guys like

hope OP can get something out of this too, it should be "relatively" easy to use as a template as long as OP understands how to manage/extend named ranges

When adding an extra wildcard it also finds string parts not at the beginning.
