I can't fully answer this, but this response will bump your post back to the top of the pile so someone else might see it.

If you're working with really big files, you really need the 64 bit version of Excel. Microsoft says : "... if your scenarios include large files and/or working with large data sets and your computer is running 64-bit version of Windows, 64-bit is the right choice ...". It goes on to list other factors, the full article being here.

It's also difficult to determine ways of speeding your files up without seeing the types of calculations you are running, exactly how big your files are (in terms of tables and tabs), data layout etc. All are important.

Charles Williams is the Excel king when it comes to speed. He has a whole website dedicated to the sequences in which Excel recalculates, how to squeeze the most out of your memory and optimise speed. He also has a commercial product available FastExcel which claims to have a "set of tools focussed on finding and prioritising calculation bottlenecks". If you are truly serious about squeezing more out of your files, then his site should be your first stop.
