    Turn on Suggestions for Functions(Mac)

So I used to be able to type in "=s" and have all functions starting with s show up below to click on, like if I wanted to do =SUM. I would just be able to type in "=S", and then click on SUM below, then the data I wanted to enter. However, after I updated Excel yesterday, I now have to enter "=SUM(" in order for the suggestion to show up below.

I looked this up and I saw stuff about AutoComplete by going through Excel->Preferences, however, Preferences is greyed out for me. I also saw possible solutions under Edit and Tools, but I did not have any of these.

    Thank you!

Re: Turn on Suggestions for Functions(Mac)

I believe a workbook needs to be open (not just Excel) for Preferences to be active, otherwise it is grayed out (inactive).

Once you're able to get into Preferences, this should be helpful:

In Excel 2016 for Windows, you can also type = into a cell, then press ALT + DOWNARROW to toggle formula autocomplete on/off. Not sure what the Mac equivalent might be, if any. (Option + DownArrow?)

Even with a workbook open, it is greyed out.

And that is the thing I looked at but I could not get to any of the advice.

Also, this is on a Mac, not Windows so I can’t use that shortcut.

For that last sentence I meant to say, I tried it on Mac and could not find any shortcuts. That did work on my PC though. (Can’t edit messages on the mobile version)

Re: Turn on Suggestions for Functions(Mac)

Yeah, unfortunately I don't have a Mac handy. The only possible solutions I could find to help out were:

    1. Reboot computer, or
    2. Confirm there are no pending updates for Excel, or
    3. Open Excel in safe mode, or
    4. Open a blank workbook rather than one with data, or
    5. Disable add-ins and try again
