Copy/Paste setting in excel

We set up daily reports via a single master copy. We usually just copy the date/day section off of one report, and then paste and save it onto all the others. Up until recently, after pasting and saving the cells on one file, the original selection would stay "highlighted" with the dotted lines and did not need to be re-copied in order to paste on the rest of the files. Now, it keeps it selected but "un-highlights" it, removing the checkered lines around the cells everytime we save a file. Any advice on how to correct this so that it goes back to how it was before?
