How to create a duplicate Excel file that won't alter the original one if edited?

So right now we have an "Employee Details" published onto the server. I would like to keep one copy in my personal desktop and make some changes on it for my own convenience.

Is it possible that I create a duplicate so that whenever I make some changes on the worksheet (like inserting a row at the top for my own lookup purpose),and it wont affect the original file but it is still updated every time I open it?

Thank you in advance for your advice!!!

Editing a copy will not affect the original in any way. Just make sure you have really made a copy that is a new file, and not created a link to the original.

Thank you 6StringJazzer. What I meant was to create a copy version and at the same time create a link between the copy version and the original version so that every time the original version gets updated the copy version will get the update as well. The reason of doing this is that I want to insert some recorded macros so that I can lookup the information much quicker without affecting the original version. Is it possible ?

The only way I know of to do this is to create the copy manually so that every cell in the copy is a formula that links back to the original. For example, in Sheet1 cell A1 of the copy:

    Formula: copy to clipboard

I am still puzzling about what you meant by this:
whenever I make some changes on the worksheet (like inserting a row at the top for my own lookup purpose),and it wont affect the original file
Nothing you do in the copy will affect the original file.

If your 2nd file is linked to the original, any changes you make to the 2nd file, will have no affect on the original.

I guess the only thing I can do is copy the content from the original file and paste it over a new workbook as link, and then reformat it to make it look like the original file. Thank you for the help!
