Quick way to compare excel versions

    Hi All,

Is there a quick way to compare versions of excel? Or a page with release notes for each version? Our office currently has version 16.0.4549.1000 installed on all computers and IT won't upgrade, I wanted to find a list of changes since then so I can take it to our managers to show them what we're missing out on.

    Thanks in advance!

Do a quick google search for office 16.0.4549.1000

Compare that to a search for latest version numbers

Updates are listed by date and channel here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/off...roplus-by-date

Feature comparisons will take a little work though.

Re: Quick way to compare excel versions

Thanks for the replies. In all my searches I can't find any pages which list numbers similar to the version number I am seeing in my 'about excel' - 16.0.4549.1000. Numbers I get in the page above are all of format 'Version 1809 (Build 10827.20150)'. I can't find anything by google searching my version number either. Is there another number I should be looking for?

I think that's because you are not on an O365 subscription. So you won't have any of the features added since release; all you get is bug/security fixes.

What exactly are you trying to determine - and why?

Re: Quick way to compare excel versions

I'm trying to determine what features I and the rest of our company are missing out on. e.g. TEXTJOIN, PivotTable defaults etc.

Not sure if we have office 365, I'd have to check tomorrow, but regardless I'm sure it's possible there are some features we are missing out on and want to see if there's a way I can confirm. If it turns out IT isn't updating purely out of laziness I can get a higher up to sort them out, if there's nothing I'm missing out on then I can rest easy!

Re: Quick way to compare excel versions

If the version you are using with your company is the version listed in your profile, then as Rory says you will only get bug fixes and security releases, not the new features that are only currently available in an Office 365 subscription (e.g. TEXTJOIN). The version you have is a standalone version, not a subscription version, so you aren't actually missing out on anything. The company would have to move to an Office 365 business model for you to access these features.

Re: Quick way to compare excel versions

OK thanks for that AliGW. Out of curiosity how could I have determined that myself?

Wish my IT had responded to my request by saying "that's the latest version we have available" rather than "we can't upgrade you because we need to keep everyone on the same version"! Would have been a lot simpler.

Re: Quick way to compare excel versions

If you are ever unsure, then type this into a Google search:

    Excel version 16.0.4549.1000
You will see that Office 2016 comes up in the various links - Office 2016 is standalone, whereas Office 365 is the subscription model.

Also, when you run up any of the apps, the splash screen will say Office (or Excel) 2016, NOT Office (or Excel) 365.

With regard to your IT department, they are quite right about keeping everyone on the same version: they will apply updates on a company-wide basis at a time when it is convenient for them to do so. Trying to do it piecemeal across the company would be a recipe for disaster, and would create inconsistencies.

Maybe you asked them the wrong question?

On which I can't see the version number 16.0.4549.1000 anywhere, or anything to confirm if this is the latest version...

This page shows me there was an update made available this year, but doesn't list the version number.

My other company is quite happy to update on an as-needed basis where approved and nothing seems to have exploded yet! But that's a separate discussion!

Re: Quick way to compare excel versions

Well, not really, since you are accusing them of being lazy!!!

The point is that each IT department will have its policies: honestly, they are in place for a reason.

Anyway, it's probably all moot: all you need to do is run the app on your work PC and look at the splash screen. If it says Excel 2016, then it won't matter how many updates behind you are, you won't be getting additional features. If. however, it says Excel 365, then you have the subscription model. Which is it, please?

Re: Quick way to compare excel versions

haha yeah I don't think we need to get into an argument into our opinions on my IT departments policies, I don't think either of us have enough background to understand what they've based their policies on and whether those policies are best for our specific company.

I think we've established that I have Excel 2016 and yes it's a moot point. I was curious to see if there was a way to confirm for myself if my version number is the latest and if not what the changes had been since my version (presumably only security updates), but there doesn't seem to be any straightforward way to go about it so all good. I'll mark this thread as solved. Thanks again!

    No problem.

By the way, I do have enough background to comment on my own company's policies, being a member of its IT steering group. I would not want you to think that I was making unsubstantiated comments about IT departments.

No, I think you were making unsubstantiated claims about *my* IT department, lol!
