Is Excel able to recognize ID numbers for tracking inventory?

Good morning all who are reading this. I am trying to create a program through Excel 2010 that will keep and maintain inventory for the waste water treatment plant that I work for.

Before I really begin making this software, I suppose I need to know if Excel is "smart enough", to recognize ID numbers for equipment. For example, if I fill out an equipment used form and punch in "equipment ID- 123, amount used- 2", is there a formula for Excel to automatically deduct that number from my inventory list?

    I hope I am explaining this alright. I will attatch a photo of my example.EXAMPLE 1.pngEXAMPLE 2.png

I suppose the pertinent question is how good is your VBA programming?

The simple answer is "yes" - Excel is smart enough, certainly, but it's unlikely to be entirely doable using just formulae.

    Hope this answers your question.

While it is possible to create inventory system in Excel. I wouldn't recommend it.

As time goes on, you will find yourself spending more and more time on maintenance of workbook, negating benefit of tracking mechanism.

Excel's strength is in it's flexibility and analysis tools, not in data management and integrity.

I'd recommend investing time and/or money on database (MS Access does a good job, or you can go with more robust multi-user system based on MySQL or MSSQL).

See link for fairly good tutorial on creating Stock Control database.

I agree with CK76, by the way, that Excel is not really the most appropriate tool for the job.

Do either of you have any recommendations on tools I can use to design the software in question?

CK76 already did that in his last post. MS Access would be OK - there are lost of templates, and as far as I am aware, you can create a multi-user system with it. Do you know anything about SQL coding?
