How to Create Multiple Dependent Drop Down Lists?

    Hello,

I'm really struggling figuring out how to create multiple dependent drop down lists in excel. I'm working with an excel doc that has over 160,000 lines of data with each column's drop down list being dependent on the column before it's selection in it's drop down list. This goes on for 4 columns thus resulting in a lot of different scenarios! Example being column A has 10 different options. Each of those 10 options has 5 options in column B, each of those 5 have 4 options in column C and so on. What I want is to have each drop down delete out any options that don't fall into the last columns drop down selection.

    Can someone help?

    Thanks!

Thank you. I think what I'm having a hard time conceptualizing is how to continue the dependent list after the first round of it.

OK. So attach a workbook showing what you have managed so far and we can help you to progress the project.

    Hi Ali,

Thanks for your help. I am unable to attach the sheet since it contains sensitive industry data but I've attached some pictures. Hopefully it's enough. I'm currently stuck with my first dependent drop down list. I've gotten my list set up and I've gotten my first drop down set up but my dependent drop down creates but doesn't let me pull it down. Thanks!

Also, I just noticed that some of my dependent drop down options are working while others don't.

Re: How to Create Multiple Dependent Drop Down Lists?

Will you please attach a sample Excel workbook? We are not able to work with or manipulate a picture of one and nobody wants to have to recreate your data from scratch.

    1. Make sure that your sample data are REPRESENTATIVE of your real data. The use of unrepresentative data is very frustrating and can lead to long delays in reaching a solution.

    2. Make sure that your desired results are also shown (mock up the results manually).

    3. Make sure that all confidential data is removed or replaced with dummy data first (e.g. names, addresses, E-mails, etc.).

    4. Try to avoid using merged cells as they cause lots of problems.

Unfortunately the attachment icon doesn't work at the moment, so to attach an Excel file you have to do the following: just before posting, scroll down to Go Advanced and then scroll down to Manage Attachments. Now follow the instructions at the top of that screen.

Please pay particular attention to point 2 (above): without an idea of your intended outcomes, it is often very difficult to offer appropriate advice.

    Hi alansidman,

Thanks for your help. I put together an example sheet but the "Go Advance" button at the bottom just takes me to an error page. Happy to send to an email or another route. Appreciate it.

Suggest you close your browser and restart and see if that clears the error page. This is the first I have heard of issues with the uploads on this forum using the prescribed procedure. What browser are you using? I use Chrome and just tested and have no issues.

Re: How to Create Multiple Dependent Drop Down Lists?

Ok. I have played around with your workbook. I have figured out a few things.
    1. I converted all the tables to normal ranges.
    2. I deleted all the named ranges and renamed them
    3. After doing 1 and 2, some of the cascades worked, but some did not.
    4. The ones that did not work had spaces in the list in column K. Need to remove all spaces and slash marks.
    5. Need to remove all spaces and slash marks from the column headers for each category so that they match the values in column K
    6. Need to delete all the named ranges that you have amended and then rename them.
    7. I did this for several and once I did they worked as intended. I did not do all of them

Go through these procedures and post back with success or issues. This was a trial and error analysis. Whew!!

    Good Luck Laura.
