    Identifying Names in Columns

    Hi all,

I'm working with a fairly large data set, (a sample of which I have attached), and I'm wondering whether there is a way to separate names from company names.

Ideally I would want to create a flag that identifies each row as either "name" or "company name".

I thought a modified VLOOKUP would do it, but not having much luck!

    Re: Identifying Names in Columns

how would excel know it is a company name vs a person's name? Is it the number of spaces contained in a cell? excel needs to know how to determine James Murphy and an elementary company are not the same. Is there something that is consistent about the companies that isn't there with the names?

    Re: Identifying Names in Columns

    Try this with helper columns

The first two columns have different formulas. For others the formula is the same

Test for column B if the name has numbers. If yes mark as company (1)

    Formula: copy to clipboard

Test of column C, if name is only one word
    Formula: copy to clipboard

Column D and others test if the name has the word on row 1
    Formula: copy to clipboard

The last column has zero if it's name and one if it's company

Note: If you have a list of companies, you can include a match for this list.
