    Cell-based scroll

    Hello all!

As I work with long excel files with different row heights, it happens to me that I find quite annoying the cell-based scroll, which makes the movement up and down quite chaotic.
I was wondering if someone would know a way of turning this into a smooth scroll that moves always the same amount of pixels (instead of moving according to match cells).

    Thank you

    Re: Cell-based scroll

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I understand the words but don't really understand the problem. What do you actually mean by 'smooth scrolling'.
Using the up/down arrow to scroll seems pretty smooth to me.
It moves the same number of rows in the same time.

If you mean what appears a very small 'hesitation' when moving over large row heights then the only possible workaround I could think of would be to hold the row heights in a helper column, then have a sheet selection change event macro set all the rows to the same height as the scroll starts, and then reset them all when the scroll is finished

    Re: Cell-based scroll

Hi Richard and thank you for the prompt answer.
Thanks as well for making the effort to understand the previous mail, I was no sure how to explain the problem.
The move is indeed smooth and goes the same number of rows.. but I would really prefer it to move the same number of paper space instead.

Please in order to address better the problem, find for reference a video I just recorded on my screen showing the difference between navigating in Chrome (where every scroll position moves the same amount of pixels) and navigating in Excel (where every scroll position moves a different amount of pixels according to the cell heights)

Thanks again for taking the time to look at this,

    Re: Cell-based scroll

    Hi Dave,

I guess by 'scrolling' you mean by dragging the scroll bar up and down rather than selecting a cell and then using the up/down arrows - although in practice I don't see much difference.

I suspect that you can't actually replicate a windows scroll, probably for the simple reason that Excel can't display half of one cell and half of another. i.e. whatever the height of a row, the sheet always has the top of the first visible row lined up exactly with the bottom of the column letters A, B, C...etc., hence scrolling down or up necessarily moves by discrete rows.

So sadly I suspect there's nothing within Excel that you can do.
Having said that sods law often cuts in and just uttering those words sometimes results in an off the wall solution...stay tuned you never know.

    Hi Richard,
Thanks again for taking the time in answering. I suspected that there was not much to do on this topic.
    I will have to adapt!

    Re: Cell-based scroll

I was just thinking in one more possibility to work more comfortable!
When scrolling up and down with the scroll mouse botton, as you said in the beginning, it moves the same amount of rows (3) each time. There would be a possible way to change that number to 1?

    Last scroll question I promise

You would need to go into the mouse settings & change it there, but that will change it for all apps not just Xl

Oh, I see. That quite solves my problem in excel, but it comes for a price!

    Thank you

    Re: Cell-based scroll

I know that this thread has been here for quite awhile, yet the same inconvenience is still present in Excel. I came here hoping for some solution to this but so far no luck. One thing I learned though is that you can simulate smooth scrolling by not making your row height too large. Max 50 would be ideal, and then just merging the rows to create a really tall cell. The shorter your row height is, the smoother your scrolls will be.
