Flash Fill (or some other option)?

    Hello.

Please see the two tables below. Data in its current state and what I am trying to achieve.

Essentially, I have a very large data set where I'd like "Name" to be copied down to each of the corresponding "record categories" as shown. The challenge is twofold - i.e., the data set is very large (as stated) and the number of "record category" items can vary from one name to the next.

Is there any way to automate this? I played with Flash Fill but don't think it's the right tool.

THANK YOU to anyone that might know how to fix this.

If this is a "one-off" rearrangement then one way is:
in a new column on the same row as the first "Bill":
    =IF(A2="", C1, A2)
    And copy down.
Now you can replace the name column with the newly created column (copy / paste values)
    See attached workbook.

If this is something you need to do regularly then some other approach will be needed.

For future reference, you will get better responses if you post a sample workbook. People do not have the time to replicate your data. However, the setup on this one was simple enough and I happen to have a slow day.

See the formulas in Columns D & E for the logic to replicate the names.

One spreadsheet to rule them all. One spreadsheet to find them. One spreadsheet to bring them all and at corporate, bind them.

A picture is worth a thousand words, but a sample spreadsheet is more likely to be worked on.

Thanks dflak. Both of these solutions are working for me. And thanks for the tip re posting the workbook. Will do going forward. Thanks to you both.
