How To Find Average For Number Of Entries

Hi guys,

New to the forum here, I have a question about an expense tracking spreadsheet I have.

Here is a screenshot of the section I need help with:

What I want to do is be able to calculate the daily average profit only for the number of days that I have data for.

I used the function =AVERAGE(O5:O35) to get the average, but it always divides by 31 as there are 31 cells. Even though not all of them are numbers, the cells contain the formulas for determining profit when data is entered.

How can I exclude the cells that don't have any data in them from the dividing number the average is calculated from?

Try an AVERAGEIF, something like this should do it I think

Possibly changing >= to > if you want to ignore the $0

=AVERAGEIF(O5:O35,">0",O5:O35)

The empty cells do actually contain numbers, $ - represents a zero value, if the cells were empty then they would be excluded from the average.

Thanks. This works however I need to account for numbers below zero as well for when daily spend exceeds revenue.

How would I add <0 to that formula?

That's a good question actually, what if net result is $0, would you want to include that?

I suppose that you will always have Total Revenue so you could just "validate" with the column, then average Daily Profit, like this =AVERAGEIF(M1:M10,">0",O1:O10)

Yeah ideally I would like to be able to track profit, loss as well as when net is $0. I'm using this for advertising campaigns and sometimes the campaign will pause for a day or two, meaning that net profit will be zero but I would still like that included.

If there is always a Revenue or always a cost, you can use that in this formula =AVERAGEIF(M1:M10,">0",O1:O10)
Just change the bit in bold to whichever column you want to use (e.g. profit or cost) and then you will get the average of the Daily Profit column whenever there is a value in e.g. Total Revenue

I figured out that I'll just manually adjust the cell range for the average function as new data is entered like so:

Would be cool to have it automatically adjust as new data is entered but not the end of the world.

Do M5 and N5 contain formulas as well?

To have it adjust automatically, we need to find the origin of the data to look for an empty cell (data not yet entered) or a genuine zero value when the campaign is paused.

Yep here's what's happening. Data is entered manually in the ad spend and revenue sections on the left:

It looks like you're pre-filling zero values on future dates, the simple way would be to leave those blank until you have actaul data to enter, then check for non-bank rows in one of those columns to control the average.

=AVERAGEIF(B5:B35,"<>",O5:O35)

You could try it based on date, but as you only have days entered in column A, it would trip up if you look back at the previous month(s) at any point.
