My Excel workbook is faster if it's the only Excel workbook open. Why is that?

I'm using O365. I find that my Excel workbook is slow entering in just basic cell values and hitting Enter. But if I close a couple other, unrelated Excel workbooks, then my Excel workbook runs noticeably faster. Why is this? None of the formulas on either Excel workbook access each other. Is Excel looking at the other workbooks every time I enter in a value to see if that particular cell is referenced anywhere?

I'd guess you have volatile formulas (eg INDIRECT, OFFSET) in the other workbooks that recalculate whenever Excel does.
