Date format + Fill cells with days, not years

Hi, I'm having trouble with how dates are formatted in my Excel (at least I think that's the issue).

I noticed it when I wanted to drag and fill down a column - I had a date 12.12.2012 written in the cell, when I drag down to fill it gave me
    12.12.2012
    12.12.2013
    12.12.2014
    12.12.2015
    ...

    instead of
    12.12.2012
    13.12.2012
    14.12.2012
    15.12.2012
    ...

That is how it always used to fill for me, and now it doesn't anymore. I even tried the right-click drag, but it did the same and the options were all greyed out.

Then I noticed that my cell that contained 12.12.2012 wasn't recognized as Date, but as General so I switched to Locale (Slovenia), but it only changes that single cell to recognize that as a Date. And when I try to drag and fill (be it left- or right-click), it still changes the year, not the day of the date.

Does anyone know how to solve this? I want it always to fill changing days when i left-click drag.

    Thanks

i think you will find that a dot is not recognised as a date , but as text , general and excel sequence may just be adding . 1 to the last character
    if you type
    NAME1
    and drag down that
it will change to 2,3,4 etc

so its NOT changing the year - just the last character

    BUT you say
That is how it always used to fill for me, and now it doesn't anymore.
I'm not on a windows PC - a Mac at the moment

i believe you can change the windows settings to recognise the . as a date rather than the default /

Wow, thank you! Setting the regional locale in Windows to my local changed the date format. I was looking in there before under English, but there was no option to just change the date format. I didn't think that setting a different locale would bring entirely new formats to be had.

Thanks for the quick answer and the solution! Owe you a beer.
