I would probably start here to make sure I understand how Elo ratings work: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elo_rating_system

This thread (https://www.excelforum.com/excel-gen...lo-rating.html ) has a spreadsheet set up for Elo ratings in post #2 that may help. The final post in the thread also has a brief overview of the expected procedure. The thread ended before being resolved, so I don't know if it was helpful to that user, but it may prove useful to you.

I'm sure we can help, but we need to know some of the details of what you need help with. It sounds like you are currently at the "database extraction" steps of trying to get specific data from a larger database. I don't think we can help with details without some knowledge of the database, how it is structured, and what data you need to extract.

In broad terms, I would expect the process to maybe involve pivot tables (https://www.excel-easy.com/data-****...ot-tables.html ) and/or COUNTIFS() or SUMIFS() functions (list of excel functions with help files: https://support.office.com/en-us/art...6-c6d90033e188 ). Maybe SUMPRODUCT() functions (maybe even array functions). My work does not involve this kind of database work, so I am not the most skilled at these, but we have many contributors who are good with databases. If you will describe your database and the data summaries you need to get out of the database, I'm confident someone can help you.

    .
Ideally, I am to use Elo rankings data for the spreadsheet. I haven't been given a source.
I want to extract the data for two football clubs in the premier league, Liverpool and Man City with home games won, drawn and lost and away games won drawn and lost - over the last 10 years. I want to show this data on a spreadsheet.
If you or any contributors can help - thank you

No data to begin with? Were you going to make up some hypothetical data or find some on the internet (maybe: http://www.league321.com/england-foo...ue-tables.html or http://www.football-data.co.uk/englandm.php )? You started by saying that you did not know where to start. If I were generating Elo ratings based on historical results, the first step is to gather up a database of historical results.

The data from the sites I linked to is not in very good database formats -- in part because they are separated by year/season. If that was my source data, the next thing I would do would be to combine the data into a good database -- maybe using something like power pivot/get and transform.

Once I had a good database of historical results, then I would use a pivot table, filter, or other summary function/tool to extract the necessary match results and/or summary data needed for the Elo algorithms I want to use.

Then feed the historical data into the Elo algorithms to get the Elo ratings.

That's a broad overview of the process I would expect to use. I don't know how much help we can give in the programming details without more details of what source data you have or want to use.
