I have 1 column with 40,000 rows. Each cell in the row has a statute e.g. §363.41(a)(1) and a paragraph of text before and or after the statute.
I have another key/Excel sheet with 200 statutes in 1 column and 200 rows.
Problem 1: I want to count how many times a certain statute is mentioned in the 40,000 rows.
My attempted solution: I'm using this function: =countif(range,"*"&reference cell&"*")
Problem 2: My attempted solution almost works. But my reference statute may be §123.45(a) and the 40,000 rows might have §123.45(a) but also §123.45(a)(b). What happens is my countif function tallies both of these statutes for my §123.45(a) reference.
Question: How do I count only §123.45(a) and not §123.45(a)(b) when it occurs?
Thanks
