    Alt Code for Subscript?

I'm trying to create a custom format for cells so that it adds text without having to type it and I'm trying to find the right Alt Code for a subscript 2.

    ex. H2O

Everything I find on the internet says the Alt Code is ALT+8322, but that gives me "é"

Can you explain in a little bit more detail how you would like the custom format to work?

I guess you can use it on Word but not on Excel.

Instead, you can use Excel's built-in subscript function by highlighting "2" in the cell, right-click the mouse, choose "Format Cells" and you will find the option "Subscript".

I have a spreadsheet for recording test results. One of the required results is a range between 2.0 to 2.1 in. H2O. Rather than having the test witness have to insert a subscript every time he records the test results I'm trying to create a custom format for the cell so that all they have to type is the numerical result and the "H2O" is automatically filled in. I'm using Format Cells, Number Tab & select Custom category using 0.0" in. H20"

See above. It doesn't allow you to use that option while in the format cells dialog. I've also tried copy & pasting the subscripted number into the format & that doesn't work either. The only thing I've been able to find that allows you to enter Alternate characters is the Alt Code and the one I find listed give me the wrong character.

You can use the autocorrect funtion.
Click the ms office button, excel options, Proofing, AutoCorrect.
In the Replace box, type \2, in the with box, type in your alt-8322 code and add/ok.
in a cell type \2 and a space.
    * You don't have to use the '\' character but you should use some other character that you rarely or never use.

That doesn't seem to work when imbedded as a format.

The odd thing is, if I just used the ALT-8322 in an empty cell it works fine, but when I put it in for the custom format it gives me the é

Ok. Here is your solution. If you follow these steps, it will get you what you want.

    1) Put your cursor in any cell and navigate to Insert>Symbol.
    2) In the pop-up window, either navigate to the "2" subscript, or type "2082" in the "Character code" field so that it navigates to the "2" subscript for you, and then click "Insert".
    3) Copy the "2" subscript from the FORMULA BAR.
    4) Create the custom format of 0.0" in. H₂O" by pasting the copied "2" subscript.

    That should do it.

That did the trick and that method should work for any other similar issues I have rather than trying to find the right code, much appreciated!
