If a certain value in seen in col X, I'd like Excel to add an "x" to col Y

Hi, I am totally an Excel newbie. I am hoping that this is an EASY one!!

    I want to do this:
If one worksheet's col A value is "words here" then for Excel to add a "55, " (55-comma-space) to a string of numbers that live in some (not all) cells of col R cells.

So it will start like this:
    col A col R
    "ab cd" 2, 4, 5, 8, etc, 55,

    Is that possible? Easy?

    Thank you VERY much!!

And can I also do this same thing, if col 1A is on worksheet "Tags" and col R is on Worksheet "Records" ??

could you create a workbook that shows what you have AND the expected results? Go advanced (below this quick reply window) then manage attachments then browse and upload to upload a workbook.

Hi, I'm unable to paste anything here. Yes, popups are set to allow. THANK YOU for your help!!

My "illustration" below is all off; but it should all happen in A, and in R. The "|"s are column lines.

Here is basically what I have: (I will need to manually update the "x" value each time I run this.)

    have:
    ____________________________________
    A | | | | | P | Q | R | etc
    ____________________________________
    ab | | | | | | |1, | |
    ____________________________________

    need:
    ____________________________________
    A | | | | | P | Q | R | etc
    ____________________________________
    ab | | | | | | |1, x,|
    ____________________________________

Re: If a certain value in seen in col X, I'd like Excel to add an "x" to col Y

Given I am unable to upload a file here, I will try to explain again:

    I have:
    A-----B-----C-----D-----
    ab

    I need:
    A-----B-----C-----D-----
    ab----------x---------

If ab is in A1, put x into C1.
And if ab is in A21, put x into C21

I hope I can do this some fast way?

    Thank you so much~!

Why can't you upload a file?

That is moot. It's not working when I try, and my problem is understandable by my explanation. Please post only with tips to solve my need, above.

To attach a file click the " Go advanced" button, then " manage attachments" and follow the wizard ( the paperclip is OOO)
Noone can expect volunteers working for FREE on their spare time to mock up a sheet for you to test the solution you get for free.
    Thanks

    Jennifre - this is unnecessary:

Please post only with tips to solve my need, above
Greg is perfectly within his rights to ask why you can't post a workbook, which would help you to a swifter resolution of your problem.

Follow the instructions from Pepe in post #8 to attach your sample workbook here. It is YOU who is asking for help: if your helpers ask to see a workbook, then please provide it. Then they can "solve your need" for you.

Thank you for your respectful co-operation.

Hi, as I said to Greg, literally, It's not working for me. When I'm in Advanced and click the paper clip, the box behind it jumps sightly, but never allows me into the normal find - attach interface I was expecting... yet nothing I can browse then attach appears, when I click the paperclip.

Not sure why, but, my issue is so simple that my description should cover it well enough.

If anyone has questions about what I wrote, I'm eager to answer them!

If you were to follow the instructions given to you by Pepe, you would not still be trying to use the non-functioning paperclip!!!

Unfortunately the attachment icon doesn't work at the moment, so to attach an Excel file you have to do the following: just before posting, scroll down to Go Advanced and then scroll down to Manage Attachments. Now follow the instructions at the top of that screen.

Not sure why, but, my issue is so simple that my description should cover it well enough.
As the person requesting help, you aren't really in a position to decide. But, if you think you know better, that's fine.

I presume you have already tried this and it isn't working for some reason?

    In C1 copied down:

    =IF(A1="ab","x","")

    Hi AliGW,

THANK YOU, I'd simply not scrolled down far enough to SEE that text, I couldn't find it... :-\

That worked, so thank you for spelling it out for the dunce I am.

And, thank you for your suggestion. Because I never use Excel, I did not try that, but will now -- thank you!!
