how to lock cells if other cells are blank

Hello,
Very new to this forum - and excel in general. I have been enjoying reading the posts and learning alot!

I would like to have certain (various) cells locked, if data is not entered into other cells. For example:

IF - B4, B5, B6, B8, D6, D8, F6, F8, J4, J5, J6, J7 are blank (no data in the cell)

THEN - L10 to L18 and M10 to M18 are locked and no data can be entered...

I have played around with Data verification but can only seem to enter in one formula to lock out one cell.

It would be nice to not have to write some new code. As I am not very good at it - but I welcome any advice.... (and yes, I realize the irony in me using "IF" and "THEN" statements in my message... LOL!

Thank you in advance

Re: how to lock cells if other cells are blank

Hi, welcome to the forum

1. Do you need to have data entered into ALL of those cells or just some, before those other cells can be unlocked? (B4, B5, B6, B8, D6, D8, F6, F8, J4, J5, J6, J7)
2. What do you have in the missing cells in those ranges? (B7, F7 etc)
3. Will you be only entering data in those cells (numbers and/or text) or could they have formulas that would produce an "empty" cell?
4. Can you upload a small (clean) sample workbook (not a pic) of what you are working with, and what your expected outcome would look like.
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)

Re: how to lock cells if other cells are blank

Thank you very much for the reply -

Unfortunately I am having some difficulty uploading the document I am working on.... Says invalid file....

I would like all the data to be filled in to all the cells B4, B5, B6, B8, D6, D8, F6, F8, J4, J5, J6, J7 before data can be entered into L10 to L18 and M10 to M18.

Data entered into cells B4, B5, B6, B8, D6, D8, F6, F8, J4, J5, J6, J7 will be a mixture of numbers and text.

Data entered into cells L10 to L18 and M10 to M18 will be numbers in a time (24hr clock) format

I am essentially creating a time card for my employees. This time card records the amount of time spent on a customers job. My employees neglect to fill in customer info in cells essential for billing.
However they never forget to fill in their time to get paid.... If I can inhibit them from filling in their time before the necessary customer info - I feel they will be more inclined to do so.

I was unable to upload the work book from my workplace as the firewall prevented it - now at home on my Mac I cannot seem to upload a work book from here either.

Thanks again for your interest

To attach a file to your post,
click advanced (next to quick post),
scroll down until you see "manage file",
click that and select "add files" (top right corner).
click "select files" find your file, click "open" click "upload" click 'done" bottom right. click "submit reply"

Once the upload is completed the file name will appear below the input boxes in this window.
You can then close the window to return to the new post screen.
