update the row of 1 xls by getting the value form 2nd xls

Hi All

I have xls abc which has

serverName & serial #

I have 2nd xls, say xyz which has server name but not searial number

how can i find update the serial number of server by looking into abc xls ?

Here are 2 xls data say :

abc :

Hostname , serial #


xyz :


Hostname , serial #

Data of serial # is present in xyz but is not in abc xls

needless to say the actual data is more complex.. flle1 has serialNumber col which need to get data form file2 , i think vlookup can help but not sure how to use this in my case

I don't see any serial numbers in file2.
Perhaps the following tutorial will help. Scroll down to the section: "How to reference another workbook in Excel"

Hi JeteMc, thanks for reply, i will check & get back on the url , not sure why you did not see 2nd xls col heading serialNumber

But in simple below is how the 2 xls looks :- ( end goal is may be vlookup & fill file 2 serial # by looking at the file # 1 serial info )

File 1
hostname serialNumber LOB app name db name

File 2
hostname serialNumber
