Cool Drop Down Lists - Return value different to selection from list.

    Hi!

I have been looking for help to apply drop down boxes into one of my spreadsheets that return a different value for what is selected from the list. I have found lots of answers to this, but nothing to help me apply multiple different drop downs in one sheet.

I had hoped to use Data validation rather than ActiveX to solve this, and from my searches it looks like it will need to be a VBA based solution - something I am very much a beginner with! If anyone could point me in the right direction with this that would be grand, or if there are any websites which have answered this question.

There is a spreadsheet attached, I hope it is fairly self-explanatory but please let me know if something needs clearing up.

It is possible to use Conditional Formatting to show text instead of a number (or vice versa) when a number is selected.

If you want to use Data Validation drop-downs where the data is in another sheet, you will need to set up named ranges for the data - I don't see any in your file. I also don't see any drop-downs set up.

    Hope this helps.

I have set up the defined names now. The drop down lists should be showing in cells B2:D4 though.

I'm not sure that conditional formatting will work. I'd like the drop down list to contain the definition, which when selected shows the corresponding value. I don't know how you can conditionally format the cell to show the corresponding value. There might well be a way but I'm not quite advanced enough to know it!

I'm just about to go out now, so I'll pick this up later on.

In this example the selected name changes in a number.

I like what you have done here popipipo.

Is there a way to link the phrases in the code to the definitions in the 'setup' sheet so that if I change the cells in the setup sheet it will automatically update?

    Thanks

This does not work but I have too little knowledge of VBA to change that.
