How to remove tabs and indents with Find and replace?

so basically I have a column of Data that contains what I believe are either Tabs, Line Breaks, or Indents.

How do I find these values with control and Find & Replace so that I can remove them from the data?

Basically I have a paragraph of text that contains sentences but also tabs, line breaks and indents. Which causes the text to become very spacey. (I have about 1000 cells in a column that are formatted with excess tabs, line breaks and indents that I need to remove)

To remove the line breaks, select all the cells then CTRL-H to bring up the Find & Replace dialogue box, and:

    Find What: Ctrl-J
Replace with: enter a single space

    Click Replace All.

    Hope this helps.

That did help a lot but there still appears to be another type of spacing that it did not remove. Like a tab?

Horizontal tab has the ASCII code of 9, so try repeating it but using CTRL-I instead of CTRL-J

    Hope this helps.

Hello i believe this is the right answer I am looking for however, when I tried to enter ctrl-I onto the find and replace window nothing came up. Any idea?

What does a typical string look like? If you click on the Formula bar and then move through each character at a time using the arrow keys, does it just jump across a gap or are there actual spaces in there that causes the gap? if they are actually space characters then they might be the non-breaking space character (code = 160) instead of the normal space (code = 32), and you can get rid of those using Find & Replace:

    Find What: Alt-0160
    Replace with: leave blank

where Alt-0160 means hold down the Alt key and type 0160 using the numeric keypad.

If that doesn't work, then it would help if you attached a sample Excel workbook.

To do this, click on Go Advanced (below the Edit Window) while you are composing a reply, then scroll down to and click on Manage Attachments and the Upload window will open. Click on Browse and navigate to (and double-click) the file icon that you want to attach, then click on Upload and then on Close this Window to return to the Edit window. When you have finished composing your post, click on Submit Post.

    Hope this helps.

    Hey pete,
I tried this solution but I get an "a" with an apostrophe over the a, and when I click replace nothing is found.

Can you please see the attached book and figure out how to remove the blank spaces using control and find?

WILL HELP ME TONS! (don't worry if the URL's don't actually work).

    Please see attached excel document!

The spacings that you see are just made up of normal spaces, so if you select the 3 cells in the file (A2:A4) then do CTRL-H, you can then do:

Find what: type a single space
    Replace with: leave blank
    Then click Replace All

that will get rid of the spaces.

    Hope this helps.
