Sort Coordinates with short distance along path

Surveyed the circumference of a lake and the coordinates need to be sorted with the shortest distance between each successive pair along the path. I have attached csv file of the coordinates.

The software used to process the data joins the coordinates based on the order and as a result, the total distance is not correct (see attached image)

Would appreciate if anyone can assist with this

Re: Sort Coordinates with short distance along path

    Hi and Welcome.

I'm not sure sorting by the shortest distance will actually work. If you think about starting at your first point and finding the closest point to that then that sets you in one direction (say clockwise) around the circumference of the lake. If you now move to that new point (in a clockwise direction) and find the shortest distance then you'll actually come back to the point you just started from so you need to actually move to the next (2nd) shortest distance BUT how do you know that the 2nd shortest distance is the next point heading in the same direction (clockwise) around the lake? there could actually be a point just the other side of the point you came from that's still closer than the next point heading in a clockwise direction.

    Sounds confusing.

I'm thinking there is a way to maybe set a point in the middle of the lake and measure angles to points around the lake and sort by angle but not sure what happens when you get irregular points around the lake as I think that will stuff things up too.

    Crooza

    Thanks for the response.

I agree that if you look at the shortest distance, it could turn back on itself. What if you define two coordinates that you are sure is adjacent to each other. Calculate the heading between the two coordinates and use the heading to look for the next coordinate that is the closest. The program is only allowed to search for coordinates that are within 180 degrees, 90 degree to the left and right of the heading. When you located the next coordinate a new heading is calculated and so on..
