How to create a link from one excel file to another excel file

    Hello,

I have a master copy of an excel file with numerous workbook tabs. I then have another excel file that is shown to a different audience that is updated on a monthly basis. At the moment, the data is getting updated in this excel file via bitmap copy and pasted screenshots.

However, I am trying to create a file link between these 2 excel files where once I have updated/changed the data in my master copy - this should automatically update in the other excel file. This would prevent the need for me having to manually take screenshots of all my worksheet tabs every month.

The data I currently have also contains a dashboard that is changed when certain figures are changed.

    Any solutions?

In theory this can be done with Power Query, but it would be useful to know more about your set up and intended use of the master and child workbooks.

I have a sharepoint site where a copy of the master workbook is (with many sheets) available for one audience to look at - this is a global dashboard for all departments.

However there is another seperate dashboard for a specific department with only a number of sheets - these are the ones I would need a link to for the master copy (as we present this to a different audience whom we don't want to see certain tabs in the master copy)

The master copy would simply get updated every 4 weeks after we have new figures for the month and this should simultaneously update the same sheets that are in the other excel sheet ater saving the changes.

So if this child workbook is just a view onto the data, then Power Query (Get & Transform) to bring the data across will probably be the easiest solution.

Data ribbon > Get Data > From File ... will get you heading in the right direction. You can set the child workbook queries to refresh on opening of the workbook.

I'd need to see the workbook itself to determine why.

Do you have tables in the master file? It is the master file that you need to import from into the child file. It looks like you are trying to import an empty workbook!
