After saving my excel spreadsheet has turned into an embedded object

My colleague has saved an excel file but when he opens it he can no longer edit it. Where the cell number appears it says object 1 and the formula bar reads =Embed("excel.sheet.12","") can someone tell me why this happens just by saving and reoppening the file?

    Thank you

You should only see a formula like that if you inserted one workbook as an object into another.

I know, that is what I can not understand. Literally all that happened was the workbook was saved on a usb drive, then reopened and it opened in this way

I can't say I've ever heard of that before. Can you post the workbook?

unfortunately its 10mb so unable to do so. He sent it to me and I opened it and it resembles a modern art picture. I do not understand why this only happens on his excel.

I wonder if it is because it is being saved on an external drive?

That shouldn't cause what you are describing.

Re: After saving my excel spreadsheet has turned into an embedded object

it seems to happen after the sheet is copied and then paste special is selected to retain formulas. The resulting sheet comes up as an embedded object......

Can you provide a smaller sample file that displays the same behaviour?

It sounds like your colleague is copying between two separate instances of Excel, and then choosing "Microsoft Excel Worksheet Object" in the Paste Special dialog.
