    password protection

Hi guys, I've just installed Microsoft Office 365 giving me an excel upgrade to v.16.31. I have an existing file with password protection (on opening), but I can no longer open it, but get an alert 'Excel cannot open this file. The encryption type used is not available. Please contact the author of the file.' Any ideas how to correct this?

    Re: password protection

    Welcome to the forum.

I suppose the first question is how old is this file? Which version was it last saved in?

    Re: password protection

I've had the file for ages and regularly use it. I've been running Excel 2011, and I think the version is 15.32

    Re: password protection

The next question is can you post the file here for someone to try? I suspect not as it will be password-protected for good reason.

Do you know anyone with Excel 2011 (is that a Mac version?)? If so, open it on their machine and save it without the protection, then migrate it to 365.

yeah you're right it's all sensitive stuff. I have the old version of excel on my laptop and did try that but it still didn't open which I thought was weird, it didn't give the written alert, but just said 'Alert'

    Re: password protection

Are you the only person who uses the files? There have been a few issues with some Windows encryption strengths not working on Mac Office.

Have you changed anything else, such as version of macOS?

    Re: password protection

Yeah I have actually just updated to the Mac OS Catalina 10.15.1, however, I have another password protected file that appears to open up without any issue, so it appears to be specific to this file?
