3d Chart help for dryer Area temperature visualisation

    Good morning,

Im trying to map out a square area (industrial dryer) over height of a set of temperatures to show on average the temperature in each sampled location.

Im struggling to find a chart or method to do this, yet i have seen it done years ago...

An example of the data might be as such: 9 points on layer 1, 9 on layer 2 and 9 on layer 3, each point will have a set of temperatures taken (roughly an hr apart) with an average calculated for each point.

each point would be given a colour based on its value and displayed in the chart location, so you would essentially have a 3d chart of 27 boxes 1 for each point showing the average colour assigned.

IS this possible? can anyone help me with this?

i would be really great full....

    kind regards

    Dave

Short but useless answer -- Yes, I expect something like this is possible. It doesn't sound like a built in chart type, but I expect one can do something with this data using Excel's built in chart types. I am having trouble understanding exactly what data you have and how you want to present it on the chart.

If it helps, on one read through your post, I visualized something like a bubble chart. On another read through I visualized something like a panel chart. On another read through, I visualized a regular scatter/contour chart.

I think if we are going to help with any of the details, we will need you to upload a sample file with some sample data and a better idea of what kind of chart you have in mind.

Thank you for the reply, reading your reply and re-reading my post i can see what you mean..

So il try to clear it up better...

I have a square 3 dimensional space ( our Kiln ) used for roasting products....

i wish to measure some points in the kiln, Front top left, top right, bottom left bottom right, (maybe middle too) and the same for the rear end.

i can take multiple readings over time and generate an average temperature reading for the spot and wish to show it as a colour graphic with a numeral value inside or something for each location.

Visually i imagine something like this link below but perhaps i would need this from 2 angles or a better way to display it...
so i can see the different coloured boxes that show the temperatures in those locations

    I dont know...

What I am seeing now is a heat map -- which would be straightforward in 2D. How important is the 3D visualization?

There are numerous tutorials out there for 2D heat maps -- most of them based on simple conditional formatting (here's one tutorial: https://www.exceldemy.com/how-to-cre...-map-in-excel/ ). Since most of the difficulty is in doing the 3D visualization (which Excel does not do easily), my first thought would be to do 3 2D heat maps -- one for each layer of the oven. Would something like that work for you, or is the 3D effect essential to the visualization?

Re: 3d Chart help for dryer Area temperature visualisation

    Hi again,

No 3d is not essential, i just want to be able to record the heat readings (over time) from front to rear of the AREA, top to bottom of the AREA and display those findings so it can be seen visually where the hot and cold spots are.
Maybe averaging out the heat readings also to show over the whole days use where the hot and cold spots are....

Im expecting to find that for example the front and bottom of our kiln is very cold compared to the top rear of kiln due to design and heat deflector setup. this data and graphical representation would help me make modifications to
the kiln area setup and or the roasting method used to minimise yield loss over the batch

Any example of this would be most appreciative and in the mean time, i will take a look at this link you provided.

Hmm they use a button to click between lower and higher values....coudl this be done to select between Front Data Middle Data and rear?
if successful i have made a book that kind of displays what i think it might start to look like but im not sure if this is right direction or not.

values used are not exact, just random... i have used the numbers to generate an average in coloured column for the position over time.
on chart sheet you can see how it might look with buttons at bottom...i would imagine though if front was pressed it would only show the front section of data etc and that the position ID box would be coloured in by using averae data from the data sheet average section..

    Does this make sense?

Re: 3d Chart help for dryer Area temperature visualisation

From this data, I am back to seeing a line/scatter/contour plot, so I'm still not sure if I understand what kind of chart you want.

Let's try creating a simple scatter/contour chart and see if it looks anything like what you want to see.
    1) Clear A1 (for some unknown reason, Excel's chart engine likes to see a blank upper left cell when a chart is created). You can reenter the value after the chart is created, but this step should avoid any complications to creating the chart.
    2) Select A1:I16 (so we'll just look at the front data) -> Insert -> Chart -> Scatter (lines without markers).
    3) If Excel chooses to put data in columns (so that column A is the horizontal category x axis data), execute a switch rows/columns so that Excel will display the data in rows.

That should give you a basic scatter/contour plot where time (note that Excel will treat these as the number 900, 1000, etc. and not 9 o'clock, 10 o'clock, etc. This is a detail you may need to work out later, after we know basically what we want to do with the chart) is along the x axis, temperature is on the y axis, and each data series/line in the chart represents a different position. Since the sample data seems to be only 3 unique sets of data for the front set, you will only see three series, but they are all there. With real data where each position has unique data, then you will see 15 different lines.

Is that the kind of chart you have in mind, or are you looking for something different? What does it do well, and what do you need it to do differently?
