Get Time Zone by looking up Area Code (US Geography only)

    Hello all,

I have been stuck on this for a few days now.
My requirement is that I have a list of US phone numbers with state listed in the column. Now I want to find out the Time zone associated with that area code, not the state as some states in US have dual time zones.
Right now I manually use vlookup to accomplish the result but as the file size is very big, excel hangs up.
So basically, is there a way to link up directly to an external link which can lookup to the area code and display the time zone for that area code.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Thnx Alan, I am already using this site.
However I need to somehow link to this site in my excel sheet which will fetch the TZ without me applying any formula.
Can it be even possible in Excel?

Using Power Query, the following Mcode will bring the data into an excel spread sheet that you can employ.

Not sure I understand what you mean by not using formula. How else would you expect to match the two pieces of data. Alternatives to Vlookup would be:
    1. Index/Match
    2. Transfer whole project to Access or Power Query and join the tables
    3. Create a macro/vba to assign the time zone to a phone number.

If you upload a sample workbook, I can demonstrate one of these options for you.

There is no error if you follow the instructions correctly!

    Instructions (Please Read Carefully):

Unfortunately the attachment icon doesn't work at the moment (it hasn't worked for years, and despite our repeatedly asking the technical team who own the forum to fix it, they can't be bothered to do so), so to attach an Excel file you have to do the following: just before posting, scroll down to Go Advanced and then scroll down to Manage Attachments. Now follow the instructions at the top of that screen.

two files attached in the zipped file. One is using PQ to achieve your results. The other is using Access to achieve your results. Both work very quickly.
