    Formula for range of cells

I have a spreadsheet, that I want to have cell D;4 to equal 1 if cells D;1, or D;2, or D,3 have a value in
Can someone please give me an idea of what formula to use, as I get a #VALUE! error
    I tried =IF(D1:D3<>"","1","")

    Thanks in advance

What does your last post mean? Please be more explicit .
    "1" is a text string. 1 is a number
