Multiple words in a single cell. Possible to filter words separately in the dropdown menu?

    • Cell in row 1 has "red, blue, yellow"
    • Cell in row 2 has "red, green, purple"
    • Cell in row 3 has "orange, purple"

Is it possible to filter these separately in the drop-down menu? For example, if I pulled down the drop-down menu, I'd see separate checkboxes for "red", "blue", "yellow", "green", "purple", and "orange". And if I checked "red"...only rows 1 and 2 would show up. If I checked "purple"...only rows 2 and 3 show up. Etc.

    Anything like this possible?

Yes, in the filter drop-down just above the area that displays the distinct values, you will see a Text Filters choice, and if you click on this you will get another drop-down to the right with a number of other ways of filtering the data. Click on the Contains... button, and then you can enter the word(s) you are looking for.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks for the reply Pete.

Sorry, I should've clarified better. I'm producing this for a client. And while I could provide a list of all the possible searchable keywords (e.g., red, blue, yellow, etc.)...I was hoping there was a way to have them already present on the drop-down menu. Just one less thing to clutter up the spreadsheet and to streamline the process.

You could do something similar using formulae, and extract the "filtered" data to another sheet. In that sheet you, or the client, can type in the word (or select it from a drop-down) that you want to filter on, and the data would automatically appear.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks again.

This seems to be well above my skill-level for Excel. Do you know of any good tutorials that might outline how to do this? Or some keywords I could search that might cover this process?

Here are two links to threads in this forum which show how this can be done:

    https://www.excelforum.com/excel-for...ext-sheet.html

    and

    https://www.excelforum.com/excel-gen...first-row.html

You should be able to pick up some tips from those.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi!

I have exactly the same problem as the OP and unfortunately I can't get what I want with the above examples. The text filter option is also not good for me, as this is something other users should apply. So something like a dropdown menu with all keywords would be perfect.

I attached an example file. Could anyone edit it and help me? Thanks a lot!

edit: I am not allowed to post attachments, as I have too few posts... Can anyone unlock that for me? Thanks!

    Administrative Note:

    Welcome to the forum.

We are happy to help, however whilst you feel your request is similar to this thread, experience has shown that things soon get confusing when answers refer to particular cells/ranges/sheets which are unique to your post and not relevant to the original.

Please see Forum Rule #4 about hijacking and start a new thread for your query.

If you are not familiar with how to start a new thread see the FAQ: How to start a new thread

Once you have done this, there are instructions at the top of the page explaining how to attach your sample workbook. You do not need to post any links.

A good sample workbook has just 10-20 rows of representative that has been desensitised. It also has expected results mocked up, relevant cells highlighted and a few explanatory notes.
