Is there a way to layer tabs

    Hi:

I have a large Excel Workbook (about 7 MB) with several dozen tabs. I frequently have to scroll horizontally to check on data or calculations in a certain tab/worksheet. Is there a way to group my tabs?

I would like to have only 5 or 6 tabs at the bottom of my workbook. Many tabs, for example could be described as "Input" sheets for the main "Model" sheet. Is there a way to group those tabs/worksheets all within one master "input" tab?

    Thanks for any help.

    Hi.

I do not know how to join tabs into a master tab however you can use a macro to hide the worksheets that clutter up your workbook.

I am attaching my list files spreadsheet.

I use it to show how you can:

    a. sort a workbook by the color of the tab.

    b. sort the workbook by the name of the tab.

    c. use a userform to find and open files from a folder.

    d. move around a workbook efficiently.

Have a play and then we can modify it to help you.

Another possibility is covered in my mini-blog article at the link below. In short, if you set it up the way I proposed, you can press CTRL+G to get a scrollable list of your worksheets which you can pick directly from the list or, alternately, start typing the name of the sheet you want and the list will automatically filter down to all names starting with the text you typed... you may complete the name or stop at any point and select the name from the then displayed list.

    Rick and Mehmetcik,

Thanks very much for your help - I will be giving both options a shot.

I am impressed by these ideas as well as so much else on this forum. In some ways I think I am pretty good with Excel, but these is so much I know nothing about.

My approach would be to 1st determine if you really do need "several dozen tabs" in the 1st place!!

Many times, it has been the case that members need at most 1 or 2 data input sheets, then another few that will run ALL the calcs based off those input sheets.
    1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)

    FDibbins,

Thanks. I thought somebody would say that. But I’m doing some pretty serious number crunching (I’m an environmentalist looking at a range of alternatives for a municipal water system in often arid California), and emulating what the utility is doing but in a transparent way.

I could put all the input sheets together but then would have to navigate that sheet to find what I was looking for. I’m not claiming I’m doing this the best or most efficient way but others doing this kind of stuff are perhaps more comp,I cared and certainly less transparent.

I understand, you know your application the best, but it would be remiss of me to not mention that - many thing having a kazillion sheets makes things look really impressive, when all they need is 3
