sorting multiple columns maintaining row relationships

This is obviously a beginner's question but I can't find the answer - probably because I am not phrasing the question correctly.

I have an Excel file (Office 2007) created from a txt file (which originally came from another Excel file).

In the past when I sorted a column, the other columns maintained their relationships to the sorted column. But now, when I sort on a certain column that column get sorted but the others remain unchanged so that the relationship between the columns is destroyed. I obviously do not want this kind of sort but I do not know what I did to make Excel sort differently.

How can I sort the contents in a column while maintaining the row relationship with the data in the other columns?
