i have often used excel in office 2007 and was able to open them in the same instance without having to have another worksheet to open in another window. however i cannot do this in office 2013.
I have searched online for an answer and so far everyone else wants to open them separately, however I DO NOT.
can someone help me resolve this.

I suspect you are confusing the SDI interface with separate instances. If so, there is no way to turn it off.
